Subject: Removal of Calgary Mayor and Council
Dear Premier Smith,
I write this letter on behalf of tens of thousands of Calgary homeowners whom are dismayed by the proposed devastation of their communities by Jyoti Gondek and her coalition on the Calgary City Council.
As you are aware, Jyoti Gondek and her squad of 7 councillors are in the process of passing a bylaw re-zoning the entire city of Calgary to allow for the quadrupling of population densities in existing, well established, Calgary communities.
Jyoti Gondek and the Councillors that support her need to be removed under the Municipal Government Act for the same reasons that the Mayor and Council of Chestermere were recently removed by Minister McIver. They are making spending decisions for political purposes that are far removed from the wishes of homeowners and property taxpayers in the City of Calgary.
The planned rezoning of Calgary was done without a plebiscite and without prior consultation with Calgary homeowners that have an interest in living in safe communities with their present traffic and parking densities. It is being done under the fallacy that quadrupling residential densities in existing communities and concentrating all of the vehicle exhaust and emissions in existing neighborhoods with water, power and sewer infrastructure never designed for such uses is somehow more environmentally friendly than simply building modern homes on purpose designed new communities on land outside of existing neighborhoods.
Ms. Gondek is now going through a sham public consultation process that will not change the minds of either Ms. Gondek or her cabal on the Calgary City Council.
Thousands of Calgarians respectfully request that you advise Ms. Gondek that unless her rezoning plans are abandoned, the province will amend the municipal government act to prohibit the planned rezoning of Calgary and to require in the future that any zoning change that materially affects population densities in established neighbourhoods only be done by vote on a neighborhood by neighbourhood basis.
Your government needs to internalize that the plan to redistribute population in Calgary is nothing less than a political manoeuvre designed to change the demographics of existing urban provincial constituencies. It is most likely being done to ensure that Naheed Nenshi is elected as Justin Trudeau's preferred Premier of Alberta to the detriment of freedom and democracy in this province.
We respectfully request your most urgent attention to this matter given that thousands of Calgarians are living in despair at the prospect of the complete degradation of the character and livability of their communities and the health and safety of their children.
Sincerely yours,
Jeffrey R.W. Rath, B.A. (Hons.), LL.B. (Hons.)
